A MAN was arrested as he ran across the canal in Huddersfield after a burglary at an engineering firm.

The 37-year-old was being questioned at the weekend on suspicion of breaking into Thomas Broadbent and Sons Ltd, on Queen Street South.

Police were called by a member of the public who was looking out from his flat over Broadbent’s yard and had seen a disturbance at about 8.45pm on Friday.

When they arrived, the gates were unlocked and a man was seen loading steel into a lorry.

Three people ran off towards the canal by Kings Mill Lane in Aspley and one was thought to have gone into the water.

The fire service was put on standby to help carry out a possible rescue, but later stood down.

The arrested man was detained as he ran across a footbridge.

Two suspects remain on the run.
