MORE than 40 jobs are set to go at the Huddersfield offices of engineering firm Brook Crompton, it is claimed.

The company warned yesterday that job losses were on the cards at the Longroyd Bridge base as part of major redundancies across its UK operations.

It is understood that 45 redundancies are planned at St Thomas Road.

The company has about 150 employees there.

The electric motor manufacturer plans to close its factory at Guiseley, near Leeds, with the loss of all 225 jobs there and make redundancies at its specialist motors plant in Blackheath, West Midlands.

The Guiseley works is expected to close by the middle of the year - with production of large motors shifting to other group sites overseas.

In total, the company said job losses could be as high as 400.

The company has blamed the move on the need to cut operating costs in the face of a slowdown in the UK market and fierce international competition.

Graham Harries, UK managing director for Brook Crompton, was in meetings today and was unavailable to comment.

However, the company has insisted that Huddersfield would remain the base to service Brook Crompton's UK market and for product development and engineering support.

Brook Crompton, owned by Singapore-based Lindeteves-Jacoberg, ended manufacturing at Huddersfield two years ago - with most production switching to Poland, China and India.

Parts of the giant Brook Crompton site are being demolished to make way for new business use.
