COUNCILLORS have set the ball rolling on a plan to merge two Batley schools.

Kirklees Council wants to bring together Brownhill St Saviour’s Junior School and Brownhill Infant School.

The plan would eliminate the need for children to change school aged seven, giving youngsters one school to attend from the age of four to 11.

The new primary school would be in the existing buildings of the schools, which are next to each other on Upper Batley Lane.

All the pupils of the two schools would be automatically enrolled in the new school but a new staffing structure could lead to changes in the number of teachers.

Kirklees Council’s cabinet yesterday gave the green light for the proposal to move forward.

A six-week consultation will begin next month and the new primary school could open in April 2014.
