STRAY sparks from contractors caused a fire on Mirfield's busiest street yesterday.

A stone cutting saw being used by builders converting the two floors above Speight's Lighting on Huddersfield Road created a spark which landed on flammable material and started the blaze at about 11am. Brighouse, Batley, Dewsbury and Huddersfield fire crews were called.

Four of the workers were led out of the building suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service said the contractors had tried to put out the fire with water before calling 999.

She added: "At the first sign of fire we always advise people that they should call the fire service and get themselves out of the way of danger."
