WORKMEN have pledged to clear a Huddersfield town centre "building site" each evening after vandals struck.

Clive Winter arrived at his shoe repair shop in Westgate yesterday to find the curved glass and window frame had been damaged.

The attack follows a similar incident about two weeks ago at another Westgate store.

It is believed that the vandals used a paving slab left overnight by contractors carrying out work to pedestrianise parts of the town centre.

Mr Winter estimated it would cost about £2,000 to replace the damaged window and frame.

He said: "The workmen were paving outside my shop on Sunday.

"The paving slabs had been left behind a fence that's only about three feet high, so anyone can get in."

A spokesman for Kirklees highways, which has contracted the work, said closed circuit TV footage was being studied to find out what had happened.

But he said contractors had agreed to take all materials and equipment to a secure compound at the end of each day.

He said: "They have been removing lightweight materials from the site and only left very heavy materials, such as the paving stones.

"These are items we can only lift with special equipment, so it must have taken at least two people to move it."

The spokesman said: "In future, we won't be leaving anything on site."
