PEOPLE in two Kirklees Council wards who are interested in working in building are invited to an event to find out more.

The Construction in the Community team will be at Thornton Lodge Community Centre from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, April 22.

The European Union's Social Fund will pay for a two-year £264,000 skills training project.

The scheme is open to anyone over 16 living in the Newsome and Crosland Moor wards who are unskilled, school- leavers or unemployed.

People who sign up go through 12 weeks intensive training in general building or 16 weeks in plumbing or electrical training.

All trainees gain certificates in health and safety, manual handling and first aid and a recognised qualification in their chosen trade.

Tools, equipment and safety boots are provided.

Also, help is available for travel expenses to and from the training centres.

On completing the course, trainees are given help in finding jobs.

Companies receive a subsidy of £88 a week for six months towards the trainee's wage, a toolkit and personal protection equipment for the trainee, support from the project team and cash for an NVQ Level 2 course or its equivalent.
