BUILDERS have started work on a brand new sports hall for Colne Valley High School.

Students will use it during the day and other people on evenings and Sundays.

A four-court hall will be built on the Linthwaite site along with two new floodlit five-a-side synthetic pitches.

Cash from the Kirklees Big Lottery Fund is paying for the project.

Head teacher Linda Wright said: "We are so pleased that we are finally having our sports centre built.

"This means now that not only do we have the same facilities as other schools, but we can increase the range of indoors sports and activities."

The construction work is due to finish in the new year.

Once up and running, the new sports hall will be managed by Kirklees Active Leisure, the organisation with charitable status which runs all the district's council-owned sports centres and swimming pools.

Ruth Pawson, of Kirklees Active Leisure, said: "We are making sure that the new sports hall's evening and weekend timetable complements that of Colne Valley Leisure Centre in Slaithwaite so we can offer a wide range of activities and sport."
