A BURST water main caused chaos in Skelmanthorpe when one of its main roads was closed off during morning rush hour.

Water flooded on to a section of the road at the junction of Cumberworth Road and Huddersfield Road after a water main burst early yesterday.

The water ripped up sections of the road which will need to be re-surfaced once workmen have fixed the leak and assessed the damage.

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Water said: “We were informed of a burst to an eight inch water main on Cumberworth Road at its junction with Huddersfield Road shortly after 7am.

“Our workmen isolated the leak first thing and were working throughout the morning to repair the water main.

“Unfortunately we had to close one lane to traffic to carry out the vital repairs so traffic management measures were put in place.

“Repairs will then be made to the road surface damaged as a result of the burst main. We apologise for any convenience caused while this work was carried out.”
