Two famous names of fashion are leaving a Huddersfield shopping centre.

Burton and Miss Selfridge have both opted not to renew their leases in the Kingsgate Centre.

The two clothing shops, located in the far end of the centre, are set to close a week on Saturday.

HMV has already been lined up to take over the Burton unit.

Burton was not able to respond to an inquiry but the Examiner understands neither retailer will be re-opening elsewhere in town and the staff are to be made redundant.

The nearest stores are now in Halifax or at the White Rose Centre.

Kingsgate Centre manager Jonathan Hardy said he was pleased to welcome back music retailer HMV, who only left Kingsgate in 2013.

Ironically, HMV’s unit was taken on at the time by Burton’s sister firm, Topshop and Topman, which relocated from New Street.

Mr Hardy said the centre was 95% let with Roman Clothing and Menkind filling stores recently vacated by Wallis and Magenta.

And he said Topshop and Topman, operated by Arcadia – the same parent company as Burton and Miss Selfridge – were definitely not leaving.

A spokeswoman for Miss Selfridge said: “Trading conditions remain extremely challenging but fashionability, quality and value are still a clear priority for us.

“We are continually reviewing our store portfolio and looking at ways in which our customers shop.

“As a group we remain committed to providing accessibility and breadth of offer, whether it be in our stores or online.

“Our .com platforms are stronger than ever and bridge the gap geographically. However, we continue to grow our brand presence through our shop-in-shops OUTFIT and even our larger stores which continue to offer traditional shoppers that experience they desire.”

A property website has revealed the cost of renting an average sized unit at Kingsgate is £110,000 per year.

Last year bosses of the centre revealed plans for a 140,000 sqft extension, subject to planning.

Burton was founded in 1903 by Yorkshireman Montague Burton and was hailed for revolutionising British men’s tailoring.

Within a decade of launching, Burton was offering made-to-measure suits and overcoats at prices working men could afford.

By 1925 Burton was the largest chain of tailoring stores in the world and had a large manufacturing centre in the Harehills area of Leeds.

By 1945 the brand was estimated to be clothing around one-fifth of the British male population.

The company has sponsored Leeds United and was the employer of controversial chairman Peter Ridsdale, widely blamed for the financial disaster at the Elland Road club in the early 2000s.

Miss Selfridge was founded in London department store Selfridges in the 1960s and acquired by Arcadia group in 1999 along with Wallis and Outfit.
