A BUS driver was racially assaulted and spat at by a motorist in a road rage incident in Skelmanthorpe.
The incident happened during Monday evening’s rush-hour when a Huddersfield Bus 82 was dropping off passengers on Commercial Road, Skelmanthorpe.
As the bus began to pull out a black Saab overtook it, allegedly without signalling.
Police said the Saab pulled into a side street before reversing back out on to the main road in the opposite lane to the bus.
This action caused the bus driver to brake hard to avoid colliding with the Saab.
Both vehicles were side by side on opposite sides of the road when the driver of the Saab wound down his window and racially abused the Jamaican bus driver, spitting at him before driving off. The bus driver carried on his route, reporting the incident when he had finished his journey.
Police said the suspect was driving an old style black Saab with a distinctive rear aerial.
Police investigating the incident have described the motorist as a white man in his later 30s or early 40s with short dark hair.
He was of stocky build with two dark front teeth. He also had a large tattoo on his right upper arm and is thought to be local to the area.
A spokesman for Huddersfield Bus Company said: “We are aware of an incident where a member of staff was assaulted.
“We have a zero tolerance approach to abuse on our services and will work with the police to catch those individuals responsible.”
The incident happened at 5.15pm when the service was going between Huddersfield and Denby Dale.
