BUS users in Bradley are frightened and angry after a spate of robberies that have left them stranded after dark.

The 328 First Huddersfield bus was held up by a man claiming to have a gun on Monday at 10.10pm.

The bus, which usually runs along Keldregate, in Bradley, will now stop at Deighton Police Station after 6.45pm.

Last week, First's 327 service was also forced to change its route in the evenings following an armed attack on a 34-year-old driver.

Arriva suspended all its services through Bradley at night in the autumn after three of its drivers were robbed.

First Huddersfield has now stopped any buses travelling along Keldregate, Bradley, after 6pm - meaning people in Bradley have no buses at all in the evening.

Julie Shaw, 26, who has lived in Bradley for three years, said she had stopped using the bus in the evening, preferring to take a taxi if she was going out.

"There are often gangs of kids hanging about or messing around on the bus, and I just did not feel comfortable," she said.

"I sometimes used to get the bus back from town if I had been out but I have not for a while now.

"My biggest worry is the robber last week had a gun. It is frightening that people are carrying weapons."

Christine Foster, 58, of Bradley, said the axing of the services through Bradley would mean she could not get about in the evening.

But she said the company had made the right decision.

"I am angry but you can't blame drivers not wanting to come along this route at night after what has happened," she said. "I am just hoping we can all get back to normal again very soon."

In Monday's robbery, a man boarded the bus on Fartown Green Road and sat directly behind the driver. When all the other passengers had got off he asked the driver to stop near the Little John pub in Keldregate. He then said he had a gun and demanded cash.

First have offered £500 rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the robbers.

Anyone with information should call the police on 01484 436582 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
