A fire-damaged business once run by a World Cup winner could get a new lease of life.

The former joinery workshop and funeral parlour that was run by former Huddersfield Town and England fullback Ray Wilson was devastated by a blaze in 2011.

Now the company behind the successful Wellington Mills regeneration at Lindley plans to take over the site – which is high above the M62 by the Outlane roundabout.

The Office Hub have come up with plans for a development, which would offer office services for small businesses across Huddersfield and Calderdale. They say the co-working hub would run like a gym membership scheme, with firms buying flexible office space and internet links when they need it.

Artists’ impressions submitted to Kirklees Council show an imposing building on the hillside above the slip road to the M62 at Outlane.

It would include at least 15 separate offices with support functions in a building which is four storeys in some parts.

A spokesman for The Office Hub said: “This building is in a very prominent position and is probably the first landmark as people enter Kirklees from Manchester on the M62. It currently gives a first impression of a rundown, deprived area.

“It was used as a joinery workshop until December 2011 when a serious fire caused the structure to become unsafe and was part demolished to avoid debris being blown onto the motorway slip road”.

The fire in December 2011 broke out shortly after 6am and was fought by four fire crews from Huddersfield, Elland and Brighouse.

Highways Agency staff sealed off the slip road on to the westbound carriageway of the M62 at junction 23, causing large tailbacks in the snow.

The site was occupied by former Huddersfield Town and England fullback Wilson for many years, after his retirement from football.

Wilson was an apprentice railwayman after he left school but was spotted playing amateur football by a scout at Huddersfield Town.

The strong and nippy left back with good overlapping skills was picked up by then Huddersfield Town manager Bill Shankly. Wilson signed professional forms with the club after his two-year Army posting.

He made his debut against Manchester United in 1955.

Two years later, Wilson was Huddersfield’s established, first-choice left back.

He later joined Everton and went on to star as a fullback in Alf Ramsey’s 1966 World Cup-winning team.

He retired as a player in 1971 and after a brief spell as a manager he went into the family joinery and funeral director business in the premises at Outlane. He retired as an undertaker in 1997.
