IT is one of Yorkshire’s most successful food and drinkfestivals.

Last summer a massive 60,000 people flocked to sample the many culinary delights served up by Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival.

Now organisers are gearing up for this year’s event – and hope that it will be even more spectacular.

The 11th annual festival will take place in St George’s Square from August 11 to 14.

It is one of the largest free events of its kind and last year was the most successful festival yet as people came from far and wide to visit the food and drink stalls and watch cookery demonstrations.

The event attracted more than 70 stallholders, most of whom hailed from Yorkshire and demonstrated the wealth of excellent produce in the region.

Cathy Burger, festival manager, said: “The festival has an excellent reputation amongst food and drink business owners and is something that we are very proud of.

“We were delighted with audience numbers last year and with the feedback we had from stallholders.

“We’ve already begun planning this year’s event and have some new ideas up our sleeves – so watch this space!”

More stalls helped draw the biggest crowds ever to last year’s festival.

Jeremy Holmes, from Denby Dale ice cream firm Yummy Yorkshire, said: “We had a fantastic festival with sales over the weekend up by 100% based on sales at the 2009 festival.

“Not only is it our local festival but it is one of the best organised events that we ever attend.”

Michael Jarman, of Whitby-based craft bakers E Botham & Sons, has had a stall at the festival for the past three years.

He said: “We were bowled over by the town – lovely people and the extremely well-organised event.

“We certainly look forward to attending again.”

The festival team is now urging local businesses to sign up to help make this year’s event a huge success.

Ms Burger added: “There are lots of ways that businesses can get involved with this year’s event. We’ll be making announcements about that in the coming months.

“In the meantime, I’d ask anyone who’s interested to get in touch with us sooner rather than later to guarantee a space.”
