A FIRE in underground power cables blacked out dozens of homes in Rawthorpe.

Smoke was spotted coming from a grate at the junction of Rawthorpe Lane and Ridgeway at 7.30pm on Friday.

Firefighters were called out and alerted electricity engineers after realising there was a problem with the cables. Crew Manager Tony Rostron from Huddersfield fire station said: “The cables were immersed in rainwater and were so hot the water was actually boiling.’’

The first engineer to arrive immediately made the decision to cut the power to nearby homes. The problem was repaired in a couple of hours.
