A CADET has won the top prize in a national competition to mark 150 years of the force.

Cadet Sgt Major Alistair Findlater, 18, beat off competition from 80 other cadets to be judged the winner by the Ministry of Defence.

Cadet Findlater of Yorkshire North and West D Company, the Spen Valley Detachment, was presented with his prize by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe, at the TA Centre Drill Hall in Huddersfield.

Alistair, who is a trainee manager at the George pub in Spenborough, said: “It is the 150th anniversary of the Cadet Force next year and so everyone could enter the competition to design a logo. I’m not particularly arty but I thought I’d give it a go and surprisingly I’ve won.”

The Cleckheaton cadet has been a member of the force for more than five years.

He is a former student at Huddersfield Technical College.

He continues to work with the cadets in Huddersfield, helping to train them.

He added: “It’s great helping other people go through the cadet scheme, it’s amazing when they pass and I feel good that I’ve helped them achieve that.”

Alistair’s top prize was a £1,500 grant for his detachment.
