ARMY cadets from Kirklees impressed an array of civic dignitaries at a major event near York.

The presentation day was at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Strensall, organised by the Yorkshire (North and West) Army Cadet Force.

Cadets – including those from Kirklees – gave the visitors an insight into life within the Army Cadet Force.

Displays ranged from field craft exercises, rifle drills, weapons displays, first aid demonstrations to camp cookery demonstrations.

The dignitaries included the then Mayor of Kirklees Clr Jean Calvert, consort Shane Eastwood and the then Calderdale mayor Clr Martin Peel, and his consort and wife Janette.

Mirfield mayor Robert Bennett was also present, along with mayors from other areas.

Cadets, including 17-year-old Kane Walton-Bell from Kirkheaton, received awards at the event.

Kane, a cadet colour sergeant, received a Four-Star Army Proficiency Certificate, which is the highest level a cadet can achieve in Army skills.

The event was closed with a performance by the Yorkshire (North and West) Cadet Force’s Corp of Drums and a lone piper, who played Highland Cathedral.
