CALDER Valley MP, Chris McCafferty, has challenged Calderdale Council to pass a motion to implement the Government’s Deafblind Guidance.

The code requires councils to identify, contact and keep a record of local deaf-blind people; ensure properly trained personnel carry out assessments and that services are provided, including support workers.

They should also ensure a senior manager is given responsibility for deaf-blind services.

Ms McCafferty said: “I am pleased that the Department of Health has reissued its Deafblind Guidance, which will have a significant impact upon the lives of the nearly 200,000 deaf-blind people in the UK.

“Local authorities have a key role in identifying deaf-blind people in their area and providing appropriate support services.”
