CABINET members in Calderdale are taking a ‘pay cut’.

The borough is adding an extra member to its cabinet due to the demands in education and children’s social care.

But the existing seven members will take a 10.26% cut in what they can claim to make room for an extra member.

It means the overall cabinet budget of £104,281 will remain the same.

Clr Janet Battye said: “The size of the cabinet is being increased by one member because of the amount of work that needs to be done around education and children’s social care.

“However, I am also very well aware of the need for the council to keep a close control of every aspect of spending.

“Because of this, every member of the cabinet I intend to appoint has agreed to claim a reduced amount so that the total cost of the eight-member cabinet is no more than the cost of the previous seven-member cabinet”.

Last year the leader claimed £29,794 but will now take £26,738.

The deputy claimed £14,897 which decreases to £13,369.

Five portfolio holders were able to claim £11,918, and now six members will get £10,696 each.

As the Examiner reported on Saturday, the existing coalition will continue in Calderdale.
