A SWIMMING pool has been closed because of structural dangers.

Calderdale Council announced that Elland Pool closed last night with immediate effect after serious defects were found.

The action came after a structural report, commissioned by the council, revealed severe corrosion in iron roof supports, creating a significant danger to staff and the public from a roof collapse.

Clr Pauline Nash said they had little choice, adding: “The condition of the roof supports is such that to keep the pool open would be putting the public and our staff in danger.

“The safety of the public is paramount and the council is not prepared to take any risks on this issue.”

The Town Hall Street swimming pool will now remain closed until officers have carried out further assessments and decided the next step.
