Huge parts of Calderdale are set to be earmarked for housing and business development.

As part of the Local Plan – which sets out development priorities for the next 15 years – the council is considering where to put 10,500 new homes.

On top of this, another 6,300 homes have planning consent, but haven’t been built.

Some brownfield land has been found for 4,200 of the 10,500 homes – meaning greenfield and greenbelt land will be lost to accommodate the other new housing – also 6,300 homes.

The council is now consulting to identify sites which could be developed – and also protect other areas from development.

Clr Barry Collins, Cabinet member for economy and environment, said: “This is a chance for local people to help shape the future for development in their own areas.

“We’re keen to get the views of as many residents as possible about which site allocations and designations should be included in the plan for Calderdale.

“We also want people to comment on potential sites which have already been put forward.”

Calderdale has identified the need for the following by 2029:

Halifax: 5,030 new homes, space for 2,800 new office jobs and 1,250 industry jobs.

Brighouse: Described as the second most important area to the borough – 2,100 new homes, space for 2,190 new office jobs and 600 industry jobs. The Armytage Road area could be expanded. South Edge Quarry is one site suitable to meet housing needs.

Elland: 1,050 new houses, 630 office jobs, 750 industry jobs. Potential expansion of Lowfields Business park and the Ainleys Industrial area. A plan to introduce a new railway station in Elland may also form part of the Local Plan.

Ryburn Valley: Barkisland and Rishworth area among the least affected with 50 new houses.

Sowerby Bridge: 840 new homes, small scale office development for 60 jobs and industry allocation for 130 jobs.
