MOTORISTS visiting Calderdale Royal Hospital will find it harder to park on surrounding streets.

That will mean major problems for hundreds of people from Huddersfield, attending the hospital as either patients or visitors.

Calderdale Council has revealed it is set to extend the residents’ only permit scheme around the Halifax hospital.

For the first time it will introduce a two-tier system with an inner zone operating 24-hours a day, seven-days-a-week and an outer zone running from 8am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Roughly a quarter of residential streets are currently part of the permit-only scheme, but this will now be increased to about a third.

The changes come after several years of complaints from residents in the Skircoat area of Halifax that the hospital is based in.

A plan to increase the number of roads with 24/7 parking bans was dropped at the request of residents, who said they wanted to be able to have guests visit in the evenings.

A spokeswoman for Calderdale Council, said: “Proposals were discussed with residents at a drop-in session held at Heath Training Centre in November 2012.

“These have been revised extensively following all the feedback received.

“The revised scheme will now progress towards a formal Traffic Regulation Order.”

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for Economy and Environment, Clr Barry Collins, said: “We have listened to local people and updated the proposals to take their views about parking into account wherever possible.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this consultation, which has resulted in a deliverable proposal and should help bring order to the parking situation on roads around the hospital.”

There will be two permit zones: an inner zone close to the hospital of 24-hours, seven-days-a-week and an outer zone between 8am and 7pm from Monday to Friday.

Greenroyd, Rawson and Lea Avenues have been added to the permit controlled zone and there will be no parking in the central part of Dudwell Lane.

A resident permit zone combined with 30 minutes of limited parking in the vicinity of All Saints’ School to accommodate pick-up/drop-off times will also be introduced.

Parking on Godfrey Road and Dudwell Lane will remain as resident permit holder only.

There will be no pay and display parking as originally proposed on these roads.

Pay and display hours of operation have changed to 8am to 7pm, Monday to Friday (previously 8am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday).

Details of the revised scheme have been put on display at the Town Hall and Heath Training Centre in Halifax and can also be found on Calderdale Council’s website.

Posters will be displayed in the Skircoat area to let local people know where the plans can be found online.
