A CLOCK tower could be renamed after the Queen.

Calderdale councillors will be asked to rename the clock tower at Halifax Town Hall the Elizabeth Tower to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Clr Tim Swift, leader of the council, received the proposal from the Halifax Civic Trust.

It follows MPs voting to re-name the tower housing Big Ben at the Palace ofŠWestminster the Elizabeth Tower.

The proposal will be considered at next Monday’s Governance and Business Committee.

The report for the meeting says: “This seems particularly appropriate in view of the fact that the architect of the Palace of Westminster, Sir Charles Barry, also designed Halifax Town Hall, and naming such a significant exterior feature the Elizabeth Tower would complement the naming of the central interior feature the Victoria Hall when the Town Hall was opened in 1863.”

The only cost to the council would be in providing a plaque in the entrance of the town hall.
