THE impact of £2.2m budget cuts will be discussed by every Calderdale councillor.

Cabinet members decided that the impact of the cuts should be openly debated among all councillors at their next full meeting on July 28.

Cuts in government grants mean the council must consider ways of making cuts of the order of £2,245,000.

Just over one and a half million – £1,535,000 – will be revenue and the rest – £710,000 – will come from the council’s capital grants for Highways.

The cabinet has established five working groups to review spending across services.

Councillors of all political parties will form the groups.

Council Leader Clr Janet Battye said: “This will be a big piece of work, looking at the future of all services and it is particularly important that members of other political groups have an opportunity to play their part.”

Savings have already been made – the decision not to go ahead with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a scheme to give free books to young children, has saved £380,000.

A further £250,000 would be saved using the corporate priorities budget and £80,000 savings had been identified through early implementation of savings in the Deputy Chief Executive’s office.
