FUNDING for free insulation for thousands of Calderdale homes is expected to end in September.

Now the council is urging local residents to act quickly to get free loft and cavity wall insulation while they still can.

The council has teamed up with Dyson Energy Services, of Brighouse, to offer the free loft and cavity wall fibre insulation.

This offer will end in September 2012 because of changes in government policy.

The energy company funding which is paying for the work is likely to finish after this time.

The free insulation is now available to all owner occupiers and private tenants regardless of their household income, or whether they claim any benefits or not.

Thousands of local residents who own or privately rent their own home have already had cavity wall insulation fitted in recent years.

But figures suggest there are still some households who could be missing out, and paying more than they have to for their energy bills.

Both types of insulation can be fitted quickly and easily, saving householders up to £255 per year on their energy bills.

The Energy Saving Trust based the figure on an un-insulated, gas heated three-bedroom semi-detached home, average combined gas and electricity bills of £1,250 per year.

One local resident who has already taken up the offer of free loft insulation is Mrs Nicola Carroll, of Greetland.

“I was really pleased with the work,’’ she said.

“The workmen were efficient, polite and did a very thorough job.

“I’m looking forward to having a warmer home this winter,” she said.

Mrs Carroll receives pension credit to top-up her state pension and will receive £50 cash back from Dyson Energy Services.

Residents who are claiming a qualifying benefit will also get £50 cash back after any work has been carried out.

All the work is being funded from a number of energy companies that all have carbon reduction targets to achieve before the end of the year.

Clr Barry Collins, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for economy and environment, said: “This is a great opportunity for local residents to get free insulation whilst they still can.

“The insulation will make their homes warmer and cheaper to heat, and people will also be supporting a local business.”

Lynne Watson, of Dyson Energy Services, said: “We want to make sure that local residents take advantage of the current high levels of funding for insulation whilst it’s still available.

“This scheme provides an excellent opportunity for residents to ‘future proof’ their home against rising fuel bills.

“And they can also ensure that they remain warm throughout the winter.”
