Calderdale is flying the flag for its lush, green spaces, while Kirklees is creeping up behind.

The area has been revealed as having seven of the country’s finest parks, while Kirklees has just five.

The Green Flag Award officially recognises outstanding parks, with Wellholme Park in Brighouse being one of them.

Others include Bailiff Bridge Memorial Park, Clay House Park in West Vale and Manor Heath Park.

Shibden Esate and Ogden Water Country Park were also recognised for their quality of space.

Only five parks in Kirklees were given the Green Flag, which included Greenhead Park, Beaumont Park and Crow Nest Park in Dewsbury .

Oakwell Hall Estate and Wilton Park in Batley were also named.

The Award is currently celebrating its 20th year, and marks Britain’s outstanding parks with, unsurprisingly, a green flag.

Calderdale Council’ s Cabinet Member for Communities Count Susan Press said: “It’s great news that so many Calderdale parks have been awarded a Green Flag Award, especially as we’ve added to our total from last year with Clay House achieving the award for the first time.”

Judges commented on Clay House, praising a local community group for their involvement in its management.

Susan added: “The Green Flag Award recognises and highlights that people in Calderdale are benefitting from a green space that is the very highest quality.

“It is also a reward for the hard work that goes in to maintaining our parks and green spaces by Council staff and our amazing volunteers.”
