POLICE have seized hundreds of pounds worth of booze from youngsters in West Yorkshire – and poured it down the drains.
It is part of a hard-hitting project to curb anti-social behaviour among young teenagers.
The project, in Calderdale, has seen a team of police officers, youth workers and street wardens called the Youth Engagement Project working together.
The team is already working with 300 young people to explore a wide range of activities.
At the same time the team focuses on the potential harm that alcohol and anti-social behaviour poses for themselves and the rest of the community.
Sgt Paul Banerjee, of Calderdale Police, said: “The project gives youngsters something else to do with their time instead of hanging about on street corners.” But he added: “Our officers are using their powers to confiscate alcohol which is then poured down the drain. So far well over £400 worth has been taken.
“And if we see them causing a nuisance in the local community then we tell them to leave. In all such cases follow up letters are sent to their parents, with home visits to further enforce the message.”
