AT least 18 schools were closed and bus services in Calderdale were hit as heavy snowfalls hit the district hard.

Bin collections were suspended with residents advised that crews would try to catch up next week.

The A58 Halifax Road was closed between the B6225 Canal Street junction in Little-borough and the B6113 Elland Road junction in Ripponden because of the adverse weather.

Side roads across the area were covered with standing snow, with main roads passable but still affected.

Forecasters said there was little respite and the cold snap would probably intensify on Monday and Tuesday.

It is thought that the snow will continue falling with up to 30cm forecast to fall over high ground yesterday.

Mixenden Library was closed because of the snow.

Bus services were badly affected with Metro suspending several services while others were terminated at earlier destinations.

Calderdale Council’s minibus service was suspended yesterday .

FC Halifax Town’s game at promotion rivals Harrogate Town today has been postponed due to heavy snow.

Town’s next game is now against league leaders Chester on Tuesday night at The Shay (7.45pm kick-off).

Flights were grounded at one point at Leeds Bradford Airport with passengers urged to check before travelling.
