NEW licensing laws are said to be proving successful in Calderdale despite the failure of the new regulations elsewhere.
Police statistics for December 2007 show violent crime fell by 26% in Calderdale over the previous year – the biggest decrease for any area in West Yorkshire.
Calderdale believes some of its success is due to the council – rather than magistrates – governing licensing, joint enforcement initiatives and the Calderdale Pubwatch.
The scheme, which returned after the new act came into force in 2005, allows licensees to liaise with police, Calderdale Council and partner agencies.
Calderdale’s licensing department was also praised at the Responsible Drink Retailing Awards last year for its ‘Welcome to Calderdale’ initiative.
This offers licensed premises up-to-date information to promote responsible sales.
The Licensing Act has also led to a public register of licensed premises which can be viewed on the Calderdale Council website www.calderdale.gov.uk
