PLANS for a single body to manage Britain's mountain of rubbish have been welcomed by Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman.

The Cabinet Office has started a review which could recommend that everything to do with waste is merged into a single strategic waste authority.

It would oversee all aspects of waste policy, including planning permission, European directives, landfill tax and the allocation of funds.

Mr Sheerman, who has lobbied the Government on the issue, said it would be a good move.

"When we get into a sticky situation in policy-making, it is when the policy is developed by more than one department," he said in a Commons debate.
