A RALLYING cry has gone out to ensure the show – that is Huddersfield’s Caribbean Carnival – goes on.

Organisers the Huddersfield African Caribbean Cultural Trust wants more people to join its committee.

And people are being urged to register their support at the annual general meeting being held on Sunday (March 7) at the Huddersfield carnival Arts centre, 26 Westgate, Huddersfield, at 6pm.

Carnival officials are in talks with Kirklees Council over a venue for this year’s event as Greenhead Park is out of action because of a major revamp.

A spokesman from the Trust said: “Last year was the 25th anniversary of the carnival and since it started as a single float in the Mayor’s parade in 1974 it has developed to become one of the region’s most popular and inclusive events, attracting more than 30,000 spectators and more than 2,000 participants.

“The continued presence and success of the Huddersfield Carnival over the last 25 years has been largely due to the fortitude and voluntary efforts of the Committee’s enthusiasm, passion and commitment, but in order to maintain this standard and deliver a first-class carnival, each year we need the help and support of more individuals, bringing with them new and fresh ideas.”
