TORY councillor Tony Brice is demanding more grit bins before the winter weather turns worse.

And he claims his own ward of Lindley does not have enough of the yellow, roadside bins which provide a supply of grit for untreated roads and pavements.

There are more than 1,000 grit bins in Kirklees near places which become accident black spots when the weather is icy.

Clr Brice has arranged for some bins to be moved to new places but he believes more are needed to make the roads safer.

Clr Brice said: "There are about 1,000 grit bins in Kirklees, which averages about 43 per ward, but in Lindley - one of the wards which is more susceptible to extreme winter weather - there are only 35.

"Of these, too many are in the same vicinity and large areas of the ward where bins are needed have none near them.

"In my ward some estates are still like dangerous skating rinks long after the snow has gone from everywhere else.

"I have arranged for some under-used grit bins in Lindley to be relocated to areas where I have had a number of specific requests. These include Woodlea Avenue in Oakes, Wyvern Avenue in Marsh and Hill Grove in Salendine Nook.

"But relocation is just a short- term fix and is not the answer. We need more bins and we need the council to commit to providing them."

But the Kirklees Council Cabinet member responsible for highways, Clr Ann Denham, believes Kirklees already has more than enough grit bins.

She said: "We have more bins than neighbouring authorities and I believe we are very well covered in Kirklees.

"We are certainly not going to get any more this winter, because providing and maintaining them would be an issue and would involve budgeting.

"If people are concerned we do not have enough they should make their feelings known and it will be considered when the next budget is decided."
