THE "deplorable state" of the roads and walkways around a Fenay Bridge development has angered residents.

Hilary Pollard, of Penistone Road, has now taken her complaint to the chairman of Barnsley-based Ben Bailey Homes Ltd, the company behind the Spa Mills development.

She has also written to Kirklees Highways to inform them of the problems.

Mrs Pollard writes: "The state of Penistone Road, carriageway and pedestrian pavement is deplorable.

"In dry weather they are coated with dust which blows into people's faces and is deposited on to clothing and cars.

"In wet weather this is turned into thick mud which is then carried into residential driveways and then into houses.

"This has been the case now for many weeks."

She says a road sweeper does occasionally operate on a short length of road on the west side of Penistone Road towards Waterloo.

But she says this stops short of Mountfield Road and doesn't go beyond.

"No attempt is made to clean the pedestrian pavements," she added.

"We appreciate that the development work will bring mud on to the road.

"However, we expect all of this to be cleaned every night so that the residents of Penistone Road are not inconvenienced unnecessarily."

A spokesman for Ben Bailey Homes Ltd said: "With regards to the Penistone Road in Fenay Bridge, a road sweeper is in place to clean this part of the road several times a day every day, the matter has been looked into and this is definitely occurring."
