A pioneering community scheme has asked for those who care to help make a difference to the lives of vulnerable neighbours.

Kirklees Council will hold a drop in Shared Lives event on March 12 from 10.30am to 4pm at the Ravensthorpe Centre in John Street, Ravensthorpe to encourage people to make a needy resident a part of their family.

Since it launched the project has given a new lease of life to older people and those with mental and physical disabilities by supporting carers to invite someone into their home on respite, a temporary or long term basis.

Carers who sign up to the scheme will receive an allowance payment to enable them to take their new family member out and about and cover costs during their stay.

Once approved as a carer, they will be allocated a worker from the scheme to support them in their role and will get regular training.

Joint Cabinet Member for adult social care services, Clr Molly Walton, said: “For many people, the Shared Lives scheme allows them to live their life to the full and often it means delaying or avoiding residential care.

“Not only are they welcomed into the homes of Shared Lives Carers but they are made to feel part of a real family”.
