KIRKLEES Council CCTV operators have been flagged-up for an award.

The camera team which operate in Kirklees’ town centres have been shortlisted for ‘Partnership of the Year’ for a West Yorkshire Criminal Justice Board ceremony on October 19 at Pudsey Civic Hall.

The council’s CCTV control room in Hillhouse has been manned 24 hours a day since it was opened in May 1997.

Its CCTV activities have expanded from Huddersfield town centre to cover cameras in Dewsbury, Batley, Honley, Holmfirth, Brackenhall, Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike.

More than 150 of the towns’ cameras are run by the scheme and have recorded more than 68,000 incidents .

Cameras have also been used to assist people who are perceived from the control room to be “lost” or “confused” people, by sending police to assist them.

More than 18,000 arrests have been recorded.
