A PARTIALLY sighted man was the first to use the new pedestrian crossing facilities he had campaigned for.

Eric Crouch tried out the new crossing at the junction of Millroyd Street and Huddersfield Road, Brighouse.

He had contacted Calderdale Council on behalf of blind and partially sighted people to complain that the previous crossing was inadequate.

The council improved it and installed a waist-high green man signal which includes a special signal for people with sight problems.

Regeneration and development chief Clr David Kirton said: “The council is aware of the difficulties faced by blind and partially sighted people.

“Wherever it can it provides facilities which help them.

“In the last few years the council has invested heavily in upgrading pedestrian crossing points throughout the borough to make them compliant with disability laws.

“We were pleased to work with Mr Crouch to develop an acceptable scheme at this junction.”
