HAIRDRESSERS gathered at Kirklees College in Huddersfield in a bid to make the cut and proceed to a national competition final.

More than 150 hairdressing students from the college snipped away for the chance to be put forward to the national student hairdressing final in Blackpool in March.

The first year students were challenged with a blow dry and set while the year two students were tasked with preparing their model’s hair for a night at the Oscars.

Judges on hand to comb through the crop of hopefuls included Liz Lunn from Phase, Adam Summers, Gary Pearse and Sadie Lancaster from Halo.

The competition was organised by Debbie Wood, a part-time lecturer at the college and owner of Unique Hair by Design salon in Paddock.

She said: “This is the first of its kind for the college and I thought it would give the learners an opportunity to work under pressure and the chance to achieve an accolade whilst at college.

“We’ve had an excellent response and it was a busy evening with lots of creativity!”

Judges could not split two first year entrants and awarded a joint first prize to Zena Marsh and Suzanna Khalsan.

The second year winner was Carolyn Hockley.

The trophies for the winners were donated by Cobwood Trophies.
