The heaviest baby born in Huddersfield and Calderdale in the last five years weighed a whopping 13lbs!

That's almost one stone — and almost double the average weight of babies born locally since 2010.

Figures from a Freedom of Information request to the Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust have revealed the heaviest tots born at Huddersfield and Calderdale hospitals in recent years.

Here's the top five:

Hospital Trust Heaviest 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust 13lb 12lb 11lb 13oz 11lb 10z 11lb 7oz

The average weight for babies born at the trust last year was 7lb 5oz.

Nationally, the 13lb newborn was the eleventh heaviest born at any of the 35 English hospital trusts that responded to our data unit's FOI request.

It comes as new research from the University of Manchester says babies who are very small or bigger than average at birth could be more prone to dementia later in life.

The research found tiny and very large babies risk having a “poorer mental ability in middle age”. Those born below 6.2lbs or over 8.8lbs are more likely to suffer poor hearing, vision and mental ability, as well as cognitive decline and sensory problems in middle age.

Researchers also said good nutrition in the womb could stave off serious illness later in life, and people near the top end of the weight table at birth had the best outcomes in adulthood.

Earlier this year it emerged that hundreds of Huddersfield’s bouncing babies are tipping the scales more than 2lbs above the national average.

Figures revealed about 100 babies per year are born at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust weighing in excess of 9lb 9oz.

But they are lightweights compared to some of the world’s heaviest newborns. In 1955, a mother in Italy gave birth to a boy weighing 22lb 8oz.
