HERITAGE-LOVERS battling to protect an old cast iron column first hope to find out why it was put there.

The ornate 12ft-high post is sandwiched between Mountjoy Road and Trinity Street at Marsh.

Birkby councillor Mehboob Khan said: "It was erected around the time when trams were very popular."

He is pushing for the column to be listed.

"It's quite a nicely designed, ornamental thing. There used to be three or four of these along Mountjoy Road and Westbourne Road but over the passage of time they have been hit by cars or the council has taken them out."

Clr Khan asked Kirklees Council's planning department to take a look into the history of the structure.

"I think it's very important our heritage is kept for future generations to appreciate."

Mr Michael Warry's home overlooks the post.

"It's an interesting thing. It's Victorian, I'm sure."

He, too, wanted the antique protected and listed.

"It would be nice to preserve it and we'd like to keep it as a feature."

Anyone with information about the post and what it was used for should contact Clr Khan on 01484 221823.
