A SPECIAL church service will offer an opportunity to remember loved ones.

Huddersfield Parish Church is opening its doors from 9.30am to 4pm on All Souls Day - Thursday November 2.

Candles will be lit and added to a giant cross in the centre of the building.

The Rev Catherine Ogle, vicar of Huddersfield, said: "This beautiful event will provide a meaningful focus for anyone who wants to remember a loved one.

"It can be a great comfort to remember people we have lost in the context of the promise of eternal life.

"We invite our visitors to come at any time during the day to light a candle and add it to the giant cross that will be placed centrally.

"It will be a beautiful sight."

All Souls Day - the day after All Saints Day - is the festival in the Christian calendar commemorating the 'faithful departed and our continuing love for them'.

At noon, a short ceremony will take place at which the names of the dead will be read out.

The Rev Ogle says everyone is welcome to attend.
