A RETIRED vicar has become an honorary canon.

Canon Edward Roberts, who was Vicar of Holy Trinity Church in Huddersfield, has been appointed Canon Emeritus of Wakefield Cathedral.

The post is given to canons when they retire.

Mr Roberts was vicar at Holy Trinity from 1988 until he retired in June this year.

He was also rural dean of Huddersfield, from which he retired in 1999.

Derby-born Mr Roberts, 65, has spent much of his working life in the Wakefield Diocese.

He moved to Huddersfield from Emley in 1988 and was appointed rural dean in 1989.

Before that, he was Rural Dean of Kirkburton for seven years and also worked in Meltham Mills.

Mr Roberts is a former teacher and taught at Colne Valley High School.

When he retired he moved to the East Coast with his wife Pam. They have two daughters.
