SWIMMERS are being asked to keep fresh, as well as fit, as part of a new campaign.

The Keep Swimming Fresh campaign at the McAlpine Stadium pool is encouraging people to shower before they swim and wear a swimming cap in the water.

The campaign aims to keep the pool cleaner and fresher for everyone.

Jane Donarski, stadium pool manager, said that 100,000 people used the pool every year and thousands of kilos of chemical were used to clean the water and ensure the safety of swimmers.

"As part of our commitment to the environment and our customers we would like to cut down on the amount of chemicals we use," she added.

But Ms Donarski said that to do this they needed to reduce the amount of external chemicals - such as hair styling and body products - going into the pool.

"Showering before you swim can significantly reduce the number of germs on the body, and by wearing a cap the problem of hair products in also greatly reduced."
