A TRAIN company hopes to run high-speed trains between Brighouse and London.

The York-based Grand Central Railway, which was formed five years ago, also wants to run new cross-Pennine services.

These will see trains running from York to Brighouse, Rochdale and Wakefield for the first time.

Grand Central services that run between York and Manchester will be extended to Warrington and Chester.

The London services will involve 125mph trains running from Bradford Interchange to the capital.

The trains would stop at Halifax, Brighouse, Wakefield Kirkgate and Doncaster before running non-stop to London.

Grand Central plans to run eight of these trains a day - four in each direction.

The company says it will have low fares, particularly in first and business class.

It also promises trains with restaurant and buffet facilities with good leg- room, luggage and cycle space.

If Network Rail and the Office of Rail Regulation agree to the plans, Grand Central hopes its new services will start from December.

However, the company's initial application was turned down last year.

Managing director Ian Yeowart said: "We have been extremely heartened by the support we received following the rejection of our initial application.

"We have always been aware of the poor service to Bradford and other stations of the Calder Valley."

Mr Yeowart added: "This new proposal is the culmination of detailed work evaluating the service provision available and the availability to Grand Central Railway of suitable rolling stock."
