A CAR ended up on its side after a smash at Gledholt.

The black VW Astra SXi and a Citroen C2 collided on Gledholt Road close to the top Greenhead Park gates just before 6pm yesterday.

The Astra flipped over onto its side and careered down the road before smashing into a lamp-post.

The man had suffered head and neck injuries.

Firefighters removed the windscreen so paramedics could get to the man to stabilise his condition.

In the end they cut off a door so the driver could be gently lifted out.

A West Yorkshire fire service spokesman said: "The rescue operation took about an hour and we worked closely with paramedics at the scene."

A police spokesman added: "The road was shut off throughout the incident.

"At first it was feared the man was critically injured, but after an hour his condition was not as bad as first feared."

The man was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with serious injuries, but his condition is said to be "non life-threatening."

The driver of the other car was unhurt.
