A YOUNG woman is lucky to be alive after her car ploughed into a concrete stable block.

The building in Dalton Bank Road, Dalton, had also been occupied just minutes before the serious crash on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old woman crawled free from the vehicle through the sun roof as neighbours rushed to her aid.

She suffered a broken neck and remains in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Stable owner Wendy Priest, 44, told the Examiner: “I had just got inside after putting some horses’ tack away.

“I heard a bang and at first I thought it was someone shooting as there was someone out earlier in the day.

“Then I heard our neighbours running out and realised it was a crash.

“If I had been the other side of that wall I would have been crushed by concrete blocks.

“I looked in the stable door and there was an overturned car wedged in the wall with its headlights on.

“It didn’t feel real. She is lucky to be alive.”

Neighbour Oliver Crank, 25, had rushed to the scene.

He told the Examiner: “I grabbed my phone and ran outside.

“I knew it was a crash. I saw the car smoking and shouted to my mum to come out.

“I dialled 999 as I was walking to the car.

“As I got closer I could see a woman inside and I could see the edge of an arm coming out of the sun roof.

“I shouted to her and then helped her out of the car.”

Oliver’s mum Julia Crook, who is a nurse, said: “She was really disorientated and had blood coming from her ear.

“I just reassured her and told her the ambulance was on its way.

“She is lucky to be alive.

“The car was lodged against the wall and she crawled out of the sun roof.”

Mrs Crook said this was the third crash in the last year there.

She added: “It’s a nice country road but we do get a lot of crashes.

“We have lived here 23 years and there have been two to three a year.”

The Southern Road Policing Unit was called to the crash which happened at around 8pm.

Pc Matthew Hemingway said: “We were called to a single vehicle road traffic collision in Dalton Bank Road.

“The Renault Clio left the carriageway and collided with a building and come to rest on its offside.

“The driver only managed to escape via the sunroof and was taken to hospital with a broken neck.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
