More people are looking for money-saving ideas – and car sharing is a great way to cash in on those spare seats in your vehicle while also helping to save the planet.
Kirklees Council has established a car-sharing scheme to help reduce daily travel costs and has now signed up its 400th member.
Journeys totalling 151,000 miles – over £15,000 in fuel costs – have been saved by sharing cars since the scheme started.
Car-share members are also reducing their carbon footprint, with an estimated 46 tonnes of CO2 already saved.
Anybody can use the scheme. Just go to www.carsharekirklees.com and register your journey details for free.
The system will tell you if anyone else is going in the same direction and help you to make contact through a secure email connection. You can then arrange to share both the journey and the costs of travel.
The specialist software has been provided by liftshare, the UK 's no.1 car-sharing company. liftshare has extensive experience of setting up
car-sharing schemes and has established more than 200 schemes across the UK for a range of clients.
Kirklees councillor David Sheard, Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, said: “It helps to save money, it helps to save CO2 and it helps to reduce congestion. Car sharing is simply a win-win situation.”
