HIGH winds which battered the Huddersfield area saw a family caravan smashed in 80mph gales.

Craig Deakin's caravan, which was being stored at New Lane Farm in Scapegoat Hill, was torn from its site and hurled more than 300 feet.

The caravan, which ended lying against a stone wall on New Lane, was tossed end over end, wrecking it.

Mr Deakin, 31, of Golcar, said he was gutted when he got the call about his caravan. He added: "We were called about 6am on Saturday and got up there about 6.30am.

"I couldn't believe it. We had lived in the caravan for three months while doing work on our house, so it had some sentimental value."

Mr Deakin said:

"It's always windy up there, but this was the worst I've ever felt.

"It was blowing you over and you couldn't face the wind because you weren't able to breathe."
