AN EMPTY pub could be demolished to make way for a care home.
Horizon Healthcare based in Harrogate hopes to build an eight-bedroom care home for people with special needs on the site of The Lion pub, Hurst Knowle, Almondbury, subject to planning permission from Kirklees Council.
The pub closed in December and has remained vacant ever since.
Horizon Healthcare currently operates two care homes in Huddersfield at Langley Lodge in Deighton Road, and Hampton House, on the former site of the Little John Public House, Keldregate, Bradley.
The care home on the corner of Aldonley and Hurst Knowle will be a bungalow with a day room, terrace and communal garden to the rear.
It is expected five staff will work at the home.
A spokesman for Horizon Healthcare said: “There is an acknowledged and continuing need within the Kirklees district for residential care homes particularly such as this proposal where facilities enable residents to live relatively independently with varying degrees of care provided according to their needs.”
