ONE of West Yorkshire's most successful not-for-profit organisations has given cash to the trust that runs Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Bradford-based Sovereign Health Care provides voluntary and company- sponsored health care cash plans.

It has just given cheques totalling £100,000 to hospitals in Yorkshire.

The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust received £8,000, which has been spent on training nurses in caring for the elderly.

Helen Thomson, director of nursing at the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax, said: "The trust really appreciates this donation."

She said the NHS was moving to extend the role of nurses, so many were keen to expand their knowledge and specialist skills with extra training.

Any extra cash help for such training was very welcome, she added.

As well as the nurse training grants, Sovereign Health Care also gives £100,000 each year to the region's health-related charities, such as National Heart Research and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

It also makes monthly donations, in response to appeals from charities.

The total given this financial year is £348,000.

* Sovereign Health Care was established in 1873 as the Bradford and District Hospital Fund.

In the days before the National Health Service every hospital had its own fund, to help patients pay for personal medical care.
