PENSIONERS at a Huddersfield care home discovered the sedate way to enjoy belly dancing.

Residents at Cleveland House Care Home, Edgerton, were given a lesson in the Arabic art form while sitting in their armchairs.

Marsden teacher Debra Arnott, 41, offered to show them the tricks of the trade after performing at the home several times.

She said: “There are a lot of upper body moves used in belly dance, plus veil work, which can be incorporated into this dance for exercise. The main thing is for the ladies to have a bit of fun.”

About six people took part in the class, with others watching.

They had the chance to wear traditional belly dancing accessories while they danced.

Debra, who is six months pregnant with her second child, added: “It’s a bit of an empowerment thing for women as well.

“My teacher is 78 and she’s still doing it, so there’s no age limit. It helps keep everything in working order.”

Margaret McCabe, the home’s activities coordinator, said: “It was fantastic.

“Everyone who took part really enjoyed it.”
