CARING - and modesty - are at the heart of a Meltham school, a government report says.

Meltham C of E Primary School has received a glowing report after being visited by Ofsted inspectors in September.

"We are delighted that the report recognised that every child really does matter at our school," said headteacher Maggie McClean.

"We are also delighted that our outstanding cook, Jackie Berry, who retires at Christmas, received praise in the report for the healthy meals she prepares our children from scratch."

Pupils make good progress at the school, says the report with standards well above average in English and science. One criticism is that the more able pupils could achieve more in maths.

Additional, practical help is provided for children with learning difficulties who make good progress.

Teaching is "good" and the relationships between pupils and teachers is "very good".

The report says that care, guidance and support is outstanding at the school.

Ms McClean is praised for being far-sighted and creative, putting the wellbeing of her pupils at the heart of all her plans.

The report notes that the school knows itself very well but is too modest about its achievements in all aspects of its evaluations.

The report concludes: "Improvement since the last inspection is good; the system for checking pupils progress is exemplary.

"The school is well-placed to improve even further."
